Competitive Teardown
Paste competitors' homepages and get their positioning taken apart with quotes, the claims you still have to match, and one open position you can prove and test.
When to use
- You are entering or repositioning in a crowded category.
- Your homepage says what everyone says: "all-in-one", "easy", "powerful".
- You need a positioning statement and headlines for a page, a deck or an ad.
When not to use
- You need market size, revenue, feature matrices or live prices. This skill reads copy, nothing else.
- You know of no competitor. Ask customers what they use today and start from that instead.
Example
Input: three invoicing tools' homepages pasted as text. The user's product: invoicing for freelance translators, 9 € a month, quotes and bills per word or per page. Proof: 40 paying users, a per-word rate calculator.
Output (excerpt)
1. Teardown
| InvoiceFlow | Billo | Paydesk | Doing nothing | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Really for | Agencies with teams (inferred: "your whole team's billing") | Small shops selling products | Accountants and their clients | A Word template and a calculator |
| Core promise | "Get paid faster" | "Invoicing made simple" | "Books and bills in one place" | Free, already set up |
| Weak spot | Every example is billed by the hour | No audience named | Freelancers appear once | Per-word maths done by hand, errors on long jobs |
2. Table stakes
"Faster payment" and "simple" appear in all three: say them in one line, don't lead with them.
4. Chosen position
Invoicing that thinks in words and pages, not hours. Hard to copy: their templates and plans are built on hourly line items. Wrong if translators say per-word maths is not where they lose time.
7. Cheap test
Run two hero versions for two weeks: "Invoice by the word, not the hour" against your current headline. Confirm if trial sign-ups per visitor rise clearly; kill if they don't move.
