Facts checked 15 Oct 2026

Grok

xAI

  • Grok 4.7default

    grok-4.7Released 2026-09Source

xAI's recommended model for code and chat; 500k context; reasoning_effort low, medium, high or xhigh (default high).

  • Grok Imagine Image 2.0image

    grok-imagine-image-2.0Released 2026-08Source

    Recommended xAI image model.

  • Grok Imagine Video 1.5video

    grok-imagine-video-1.5Released 2026-06Source

Recommended xAI video model; native audio.

Where it runs

  • Grok app (grok.com, iOS, Android, X)
  • xAI API
  • Cursor (Grok 4.7 in Cursor's own model pool)

Prompting notes

  • Match reasoning_effort to the job: low for latency-sensitive tool calls, medium for data analysis and long-context work, high (default) for multi-step logic, xhigh for the hardest problems. Source
  • Reasoning cannot be turned off on Grok 4.5 and later; presencePenalty, frequencyPenalty and stop return errors, so leave them out. Source
  • Grok 4.7 has a 500k-token window, and a prompt of 200k tokens or more is billed at the higher rate for the whole request: trim long inputs below 200k where possible. Source

DeepSeek

DeepSeek

  • DeepSeek-V4.1-Flashdefault

    deepseek-flashReleased 2026-09Source

API id deepseek-flash. 552B MoE with native vision; 1M context, up to 384K output; thinking on by default; weights on Hugging Face. The deepseek-v4-pro id routes to V4.1-Flash until V4.1-Pro launches.

Where it runs

  • DeepSeek API (OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible endpoints)
  • Open weights (Hugging Face)

Prompting notes

  • Thinking mode is on by default with reasoning_effort high; use low for quick tasks, max for the hardest ones, or disable thinking for plain rewriting. Source
  • In thinking mode, sampling and penalty parameters have no effect: steer with instructions and effort instead. Source
  • In multi-turn tool use, send back every previous reasoning_content; leaving it out returns a 400 error. Source
  • V4.1-Flash reads images natively; fill-in-the-middle completion works only with thinking off. Source

Qwen

Alibaba

  • Qwen3.8-Maxdefault

    qwen3.8-maxReleased 2026-08Source

Alibaba's largest Qwen model (2.4T parameters, 1M context); Model Studio API and QwenWork. Thinking on by default.

  • Qwen3.8-Flashbudget

    qwen3.8-flashReleased 2026-08Source

Low-cost hosted Qwen3.8 model; thinking on by default.

  • Qwen3.8-27Bopen-weights

    qwen3.8-27bReleased 2026-08Source

Apache-2.0 open weights; 262K native context; thinking on by default with reasoning_effort low, medium or xhigh (default xhigh).

Where it runs

  • Alibaba Cloud Model Studio (API)
  • QwenWork (Alibaba's workplace agent platform)
  • Open weights (Qwen3.8-27B on Hugging Face)

Prompting notes

  • Qwen3.8-Max, Qwen3.8-Flash and Qwen3.7-Plus think by default: turn thinking off (enable_thinking false) for simple chat and keep it on for reasoning, code and maths. Source
  • Cap reasoning length with thinking_budget rather than prompt wording. Source
  • The /think and /no_think prompt switches apply only to older open Qwen3 hybrid models, not to the Qwen3.8 hosted models. Source
  • Long prompts with thinking on can time out: stream the response or allow 180 seconds or more. Source

GLM

Z.ai (Zhipu)

  • GLM-5.3default

    glm-5.3Released 2026-08Source

Z.ai's flagship for complex programming and long-horizon agents; text input only; 1M context, 128K output; reasoning always on. Open weights followed in late August under the GLM-5.3 License.

  • GLM-5.3-Flashbudget

    glm-5.3-flashReleased 2026-08Source

    Low-cost GLM-5.3 tier ($0.15 input / $0.50 output per MTok).

  • GLM-4.7-Flashfree

    glm-4.7-flashSource

Free on the Z.ai API, as is GLM-4.5-Flash.

Where it runs

  • Z.ai API (OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible endpoints)
  • GLM Coding Plan
  • Open weights (Hugging Face, ModelScope)

Prompting notes

  • Reasoning is always on for GLM-5.3: set depth with reasoning_effort low, high or max (default max) and use max for coding. Source
  • Requests that send thinking.type 'disabled' fail on GLM-5.3: switch to 'enabled' with reasoning_effort low before changing the model id. Source
  • GLM-5.3 accepts text only: route screenshots and images to a vision-capable model. Source

Kimi

Moonshot AI

  • Kimi K3default

    kimi-k3Released 2026-07Source

2.8T MoE with native vision; 1M context; thinking always on; open weights under a modified MIT license.

  • Kimi K2.7 Codecode

    kimi-k2.7-codeReleased 2026-06Source

Coding-focused model, 262K context; a faster serving tier is kimi-k2.7-code-highspeed.

Where it runs

  • Kimi chat app (kimi.com)
  • Kimi API (platform.kimi.ai)
  • Open weights (Hugging Face)

Prompting notes

  • Thinking is always on for K3: lower reasoning_effort (low, high, max; default max) to cut latency, and do not send the older K2 'thinking' parameter. Source
  • Sampling parameters are fixed on K3: leave them out of requests. Source
  • In multi-turn and tool-calling flows, send back the complete assistant message unchanged. Source
  • Send images as base64 or uploaded file ids; public image URLs are not supported. Source

Mistral

Mistral AI

  • Mistral Medium 3.5default

    mistral-medium-3.5Released 2026-04Source

Version 26.04; frontier-class multimodal model for agentic and coding work; open weights under a modified MIT license.

  • Mistral Small 4budget

    mistral-small-4Released 2026-03Source

Version 26.03; Apache-2.0; one model for instruct, reasoning and coding.

Where it runs

  • Le Chat (agents)
  • Mistral AI Studio and API
  • Mistral Vibe (coding agent)
  • Open weights

Prompting notes

  • Mistral Medium 3.5 has a per-request reasoning switch (reasoning_effort 'none' or 'high'); use 'high' for complex prompts and agentic work. Source
  • Le Chat agents have no model picker and run on Le Chat's current models; build agents in Mistral AI Studio or the API when they must be called from code. Source
  • Mistral points users of deprecated Magistral and Devstral models to Medium 3.5, so one prompt can cover reasoning and coding work. Source
