Technical Spec Writer
A feature idea becomes a spec with testable acceptance criteria, a data model and an API contract, and the brief's contradictions spelled out.
When to use
- A founder or product owner has a feature idea to hand to developers or to a coding agent.
- A team keeps rebuilding features because "that's not what I meant".
- A rough PRD needs its data model, API and edge cases filled in.
When not to use
- You are still deciding whether to build the feature. Validate the problem first; a spec at this stage creates false certainty.
- A trivial change such as a copy edit or a colour change. One ticket with one acceptance check is enough.
- You need a short build prompt for Lovable or Bolt. The Builder-Ready Spec Prompt in the App Builders pack is shorter and made for those tools.
Example
User: Spec a feature where team members can invite others by email to a workspace. Admins only. Invites should expire.
Result (excerpt):
Spec: Workspace email invites
Summary
Admins invite people to a workspace by email; the invitee joins through a one-time link. Out of scope: bulk CSV invites, SSO provisioning.
User stories
US1: As an admin, I want to invite a colleague by email, so that they can join my workspace.
- Given I am an admin, When I submit a valid email, Then an invite with status pending is created and one email is sent.
- Failure: Given the email belongs to a current member, When I submit it, Then I see "Already a member" and no invite is created.
Data model
| Invite | token_hash | string(64) | unique, not null | the raw token is only in the email |
| Invite | expires_at | timestamp (UTC) | not null | created_at + 7 days (proposed default) |
Migration: yes · new table only; existing rows unaffected
API contract
POST /workspaces/{id}/invites · {email} · 201 {invite_id, expires_at} · 403 not an admin · 409 already a member · retry-safe: yes (same email returns the pending invite)
Contradictions in the brief
- "team members can invite" vs "admins only": the spec follows admins only until decided
Illustrative example written by Meevra; your model's wording will differ.
