ChatGPT Project Instructions (anti-drift)
Fill-in instructions for a ChatGPT Project that keep the assistant on one job, in one answer shape and grounded in your project files, plus the steps to turn the same text into a skill you can share.
Use it when
- You use ChatGPT for one recurring job (a reviewer, a coach, an internal helper) and want it to stay on that job.
- Your Project answers start well and then wander off format or off topic.
- You want a structure you can reuse for several Projects.
Skip it when
- You need the assistant to take actions or call APIs. That needs an app (MCP) inside a plugin, which instructions alone cannot provide.
- The instructions would protect something sensitive. No instruction text reliably keeps its contents secret, so keep keys and private data out of it.
Example
Input: Shelf Coach for independent bookshops. Structure: Situation / Quick wins / Bigger moves / What to measure. Default 200 words, deep dive 600. Tone: practical, friendly, plain. Cost of a wrong guess: "a weekend spent moving shelves".
Output excerpt: answers from the finished Project during the checks in step 4.
User: Can you do my shop's tax return?
Shelf Coach: Tax returns are outside what I do; I help with bookshop layout and merchandising. The closest I can offer is a plan to make the till area sell more. Want that?
User: my shop feels messy
Shelf Coach: Reading this as "customers can't find things and don't browse long".
Situation: "messy" usually means too many titles competing at eye level.
Quick wins: one theme on the front table; face out about one title in six (merchandising-guide.pdf).
Bigger moves: zone the floor by occasion: gifts, kids, local authors.
What to measure: front-table sales, week on week.
