Proof Assistant
Finds the first wrong line in your maths working, or writes a solution or proof at your course's level, and checks it a second way.
When to use
- You have your own attempt and want to know exactly where it goes wrong, and why.
- You need a proof (direct, by contradiction, by induction) or a solution written the way your course expects.
- You are a teacher or tutor preparing a model solution and the mistakes students typically make on it.
When not to use
- Checking a real-world figure such as a price, a loan payment or a forecast. The Calculation Checker prompt in this pack is shorter and built for that.
- Graded exams or assessments where AI help is not allowed.
- Heavy numerical work. Use a calculator, spreadsheet or code, and use this skill to set up and check the method.
Example
User: Final year of high school. Solve √(x + 7) = x − 5. My working: x + 7 = x² − 10x + 25, so x² − 11x + 18 = 0, so x = 2 or x = 9.
Result (illustrative; your model's wording will differ):
Your working: the algebra is right, but the last line is wrong: x = 2 is a false solution created by squaring.
Plan: squaring both sides is allowed, but it can add solutions, so each candidate goes back into the original equation.
Solution (1) x + 7 = x² − 10x + 25 — both sides squared (only valid where x − 5 ≥ 0) (2) x² − 11x + 18 = 0 — terms collected (3) (x − 2)(x − 9) = 0, so x = 2 or x = 9 — factorised (4) x = 2: √9 = 3, but 2 − 5 = −3, so it fails. x = 9: √16 = 4 and 9 − 5 = 4 ✓
Check (method: domain): a square root is never negative, so x − 5 ≥ 0, which means x ≥ 5. Only x = 9 qualifies ✓
Answer: x = 9
Takeaway: after squaring, test every candidate in the original equation; the side without the root sets a domain condition.
