Strategy Stress-Tester
Red-teams a plan before you commit: the assumptions it bets on, how it fails, the cheapest test for each risky assumption, tripwires and a verdict.
When to use
- Before committing money, time or reputation to a launch, an expansion, a pricing change, a hire or a fundraise.
- The team agrees too easily and nobody has argued the other side.
- The user is preparing for tough questions from investors, a board or a partner.
When not to use
- The idea is still vague. Sharpen it first (who, what, how, by when); attacking a vague plan produces vague criticism.
- The step is small, cheap and easy to undo. Run it as an experiment instead; stress-testing pays off on costly, hard-to-reverse bets.
Example
User (illustrative): "I'm launching a €29/month subscription of weekly meal plans for busy parents, sold through Instagram ads. €15k budget, solo founder."
Result (excerpt)
2. The bet
| Assumption | Importance | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Parents pay €29/month when free recipes are everywhere | High | None |
| Instagram ads bring a subscriber for less than 3 months of revenue | High | None |
| Subscribers stay past month 2 | High | Weak (3 friends tried a PDF version) |
3. Attack
Customer
- Fails because the plan competes with free recipe content; without something free content cannot do (a shopping list priced at the user's supermarket, say), the €29 has no reason to exist.
6. Cheapest tests
| Assumption | Test | Cost | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Willingness to pay | Pre-sale landing page, €29 first month, refundable | €1,500 in ads | ≥ 2% of ad clicks pay |
8. Verdict: With changes
Spend €1,500 on the pre-sale test before building anything; commit the rest only if the pass mark is met.
