Codebase Onboarder
A two-page onboarding guide to an unfamiliar repo that separates what the code shows from what is guessed, ending with a safe first change.
When to use
- You or a new teammate join a project and need a map before reading code.
- You inherited a repository and have to change it soon.
- The team wants a first draft of
ONBOARDING.mdor an architecture page.
When not to use
- You are chasing one bug. Use the Root-Cause Debugger.
- All you have is one file. There is not enough evidence for a map.
- You need a security review. This guide notes risks it sees but is not an audit.
Example
User (in Claude Code): "Onboard me to this repo. I know TypeScript, but not this codebase."
Result (excerpt):
Onboarding: orders-api
What it is: an Express API for order intake, with Prisma on Postgres and a background email queue [seen: package.json, src/server.ts]
Run it
| install | pnpm install | .github/workflows/ci.yml |
| test | pnpm test (Vitest) | ci.yml, package.json |
One request, traced: create an order
- src/api/routes/orders.ts:14: validates the body with zod [seen]
- src/services/orderService.ts:31: computes totals with utils/money.ts [seen]
- src/jobs/emailQueue.ts: enqueues the confirmation [seen]; the queue backend in production is not visible [inferred: Redis, from REDIS_URL in .env.example]
Traps
- prisma/generated/ is generated: edit schema.prisma and regenerate [seen: README]
- Two money helpers exist (utils/money.ts and lib/currency.ts) with different rounding [seen]
Safe first change
Add a test for orderService.computeTotal with a zero-quantity line: one file, no behaviour change, check with pnpm test.
