Pivot Without Rebuild
Maps what survives, changes and goes in an existing Lovable app, then writes the prompt sequence that turns it into the new product without losing users or data.
When to use
- The target users, core use case or business model changed, but the app has working login, data or design.
- You are tempted to open a new project and lose weeks of work.
- A partial pivot left the app half old, half new.
When not to use
- The app is small or broken enough that a fresh foundation prompt is quicker; the skill says so when little survives.
- The change is one new feature: write a normal feature prompt.
- You have no existing users or data and the design is not worth keeping: start fresh with
lovable-mvp-weekend-spec.
Example
User: My app is a personal workout log. It needs to become a tool for personal trainers to manage client programmes. Keep existing users and their workouts.
Result (excerpt):
PIVOT: personal workout log → trainer client-programme manager
SURVIVES: login, profiles, design system, exercise library, workout form
TRANSFORMS: profiles → add role trainer|client · data: existing users become clients
· workouts → can belong to a programme · data: existing rows keep programme empty
REMOVED (last): streaks page, public leaderboard
REBUILD INSTEAD?: no; login, data and most components carry over
P1 NEW CORE: "Using the existing login, profiles table and exercise library, add a
trainer role. Trainers create programmes (name, weeks, exercises from the library)
and assign them to a client by email. Clients see assigned programmes on their
dashboard and log sessions against them. Keep every existing page as it is."
Check: as a trainer, assign a programme; as an existing user, see it and still see
your old workouts.
EXISTING USERS: on first login, a note says the app now works with trainers and
that past workouts are kept under History.Illustrative example; your output will differ.
