Skill Builder

Turns an idea or a repeated chat routine into one SKILL.md that triggers on the right requests, with a test set you run before sharing it.

Version 3Updated 15 Oct 2026

When to use

  • You have a prompt or routine you reuse and want it to load by itself in ChatGPT, Codex or another agent.
  • An existing skill never triggers, triggers too often, or drifts from its format.
  • You want a pre-share check before giving a skill to a team.

When not to use

  • A one-off task you will run once. A saved prompt is simpler.
  • The job needs to call an outside service or API. A skill can describe the steps, but the connection needs an app (MCP) or code, which this skill does not build.

Example

User: "Every release I paste the same instructions to turn merged PR titles into customer-facing release notes. Make it a skill for ChatGPT and Codex."

Result (excerpt):

name: release-notes-writer
description: "Turns a list of merged pull requests into customer-facing release notes: grouped as New, Improved and Fixed, plain language, no internal ticket ids, under 250 words. Use when the user says 'write release notes', 'changelog for customers', 'what's new post' or 'summarise these merged PRs for users'. Not for internal changelogs, commit messages or PR descriptions."

Test set

| 1 | trigger | "Write release notes from these 14 merged PRs" | loads; New/Improved/Fixed; under 250 words; no ticket ids |
| 5 | near miss | "Write a commit message for this diff" | does not load |
| 10 | conflict | "Include the ticket ids this time, our partners need them" | loads; ids included; the user wins |

Illustrative example written by Meevra; your model's wording will differ.
